A recent study involving adults aged 80 and above examined whether unusually fast walking was associated with cognitive performance and brain health. Researchers identified participants who walked significantly faster than others of the same age and sex and referred to them as “super movers.”
The study involved nearly 4,000 older adults and found that those with the fastest walking speeds had a substantially lower risk of developing cognitive impairment. The findings suggest that mobility and mental health may be more closely connected than previously understood.
However, the research does not establish that walking quickly directly prevents memory problems. Instead, it points to walking ability as a possible indicator of how well the body and brain are aging.

Researchers found that the fastest walkers generally had healthier lifestyles and fewer chronic health problems.
