The United States experienced an extraordinary period of heat in July, with the month becoming the hottest ever recorded across the contiguous country.
Federal climate data showed that the average temperature across the lower 48 states reached approximately 76.9°F, surpassing the previous record for any month since nationwide records began in 1895.
The record reflects more than isolated hot days. Large parts of the country experienced persistent temperatures well above their typical summer averages, creating difficult conditions for residents, businesses and local infrastructure.
States across the West, Midwest, South and other regions experienced prolonged periods of unusually intense heat during the month.
Heat Domes Drive Temperatures Higher
A series of powerful heat domes contributed to the exceptional conditions. These weather patterns can trap hot air over an area, allowing temperatures to remain elevated for several consecutive days.
Some states experienced their warmest July on record. Wyoming, for example, recorded an average temperature more than five degrees above its normal July level.
The prolonged heat also increased concerns about wildfire activity, electricity demand and air quality. Higher temperatures can place additional pressure on power grids as households and businesses increase air-conditioning use.
In western parts of the country, wildfire smoke created additional health concerns, particularly for people with respiratory sensitivities.
Global Heat Adds to Climate Concerns
The U.S. record occurred during a period when temperatures were also unusually high worldwide.
July 2026 ranked among the warmest Julys ever recorded globally, continuing a pattern of elevated temperatures seen in recent years. Scientists have increasingly linked the growing frequency and severity of extreme heat events to human-driven climate change.
Higher concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have raised the planet’s average temperature. As the baseline temperature increases, naturally occurring weather patterns can produce more intense and potentially dangerous heat events.
The effects extend beyond daily temperatures. Persistent heat can increase pressure on water supplies, agriculture, ecosystems, energy infrastructure and public health systems.
Communities Prepare for More Extreme Heat
The latest temperature record is another reason communities are examining how they can better prepare for periods of extreme weather.
Local governments can reduce risks through stronger heat-warning systems, accessible cooling centers, improved urban planning and infrastructure designed to withstand higher temperatures.
Individuals are also being encouraged to take precautions during extreme heat, including staying hydrated, limiting strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day and checking on vulnerable family members and neighbors.
While one record month does not determine the long-term climate trend by itself, July’s exceptional temperatures add to a much larger pattern of warming and increasingly frequent extreme heat events.
As temperatures continue to be monitored throughout the remainder of the summer, the latest record is a reminder that extreme heat is becoming an increasingly important environmental and public health challenge.
