COVID-19 Vaccines and Miscarriage Claims Explained

A renewed debate over COVID-19 vaccination and pregnancy has emerged after the release of private messages from health officials reignited claims that the vaccines may increase the risk of miscarriage.

The discussion has centered on communications from early 2021 in which officials considered theoretical concerns about possible effects of vaccination during the first trimester. Those messages have since been used online to support claims that health authorities knew about a serious miscarriage risk but failed to disclose it.

However, the available scientific evidence does not support the idea that COVID-19 vaccination causes a substantial increase in miscarriage.

A recent analysis of data from more than 12,000 pregnancies in the CDC’s COVID-19 Vaccine Pregnancy Registry found a cumulative spontaneous-abortion risk that was within or below estimates from before the pandemic.

What Research Says About Pregnancy Loss

Miscarriage is unfortunately common during pregnancy, and determining whether a medical treatment changes that risk requires careful research.

One problem with some claims circulating online is that they rely on an early calculation without accounting for when women received their vaccines or how far their pregnancies had progressed.

A large body of research has not found evidence that COVID-19 vaccination increases the likelihood of pregnancy loss. More recent research has reached similar conclusions. The 2026 analysis of the CDC pregnancy registry included women vaccinated before conception or during pregnancy and found a cumulative miscarriage risk of about 10.8%, which was not higher than expected background estimates.

Why Misinformation Can Spread Quickly

The renewed controversy demonstrates how complicated medical information can become when individual statements, preliminary research and final scientific conclusions are presented without context.

Early in the pandemic, researchers had limited information about COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy because pregnant people were generally excluded from the original vaccine trials. As more pregnant people received vaccines, researchers were able to collect larger amounts of safety data.

That evidence has allowed scientists to compare pregnancy outcomes more accurately.

A 2023 meta-analysis also found no increased miscarriage risk associated with COVID-19 vaccination.

This does not mean researchers should stop monitoring vaccine safety. Continued surveillance is important for identifying uncommon side effects and ensuring recommendations remain based on the best available evidence.

Separating Evidence From Online Claims

The controversy surrounding COVID-19 vaccine miscarriage claims shows why individual statistics should not be interpreted without understanding how a study was designed.

A percentage can appear alarming when the population used to calculate it does not represent all pregnancies at risk. Researchers therefore consider factors such as gestational age, vaccination timing and follow-up periods when determining whether an association is meaningful.
