Apple iPhone 17e Launches at $599 to Boost Sales and Expand AI Reach

Apple has unveiled a more affordable addition to its smartphone lineup, introducing the iPhone 17e at a starting price of $599. The announcement signals the company’s intent to capture a broader segment of the market while addressing growing concerns about its position in the increasingly competitive artificial intelligence landscape.

The iPhone 17e is a streamlined version of the flagship iPhone 17, sharing the same powerful processor but offering a slightly more compact screen. The device features a single rear camera rather than the dual-camera setup found on higher-end models and does not include the Dynamic Island display bar, which delivers real-time information from apps along the top of the screen. Despite these differences, the phone delivers strong performance at a price point $200 below the standard iPhone 17. It officially goes on sale March 11 and will be available in black, white, and pink.

A Strategic Shift Toward Annual Budget Releases

Historically, Apple has not followed a consistent annual release schedule for its more affordable smartphone models. The previous budget line, known as the SE series, appeared only sporadically over the years. That changed last year with the launch of the iPhone 16e, and now the iPhone 17e suggests Apple is committing to a more regular cadence for its entry-level devices. Industry observers see this as a response to growing consumer appetite for capable yet affordable smartphones, particularly following a relatively quiet reception for the iPhone Air.

The iPhone 17e also arrives with meaningful hardware upgrades compared to its predecessor. It includes more onboard storage and features an updated cellular modem that Apple says delivers speeds twice as fast as the one found in the iPhone 16e.

Driving AI Adoption Through Affordability

One of the more strategic dimensions of the iPhone 17e launch is its potential to accelerate the adoption of Apple Intelligence, the company’s suite of artificial intelligence features. Many users still carry older iPhone models that are incompatible with Apple’s AI tools. By offering a modern, AI-capable device at a more accessible price, Apple hopes to bring a larger portion of its user base into the fold of its growing AI ecosystem.

This matters considerably for Apple as it works to demonstrate its relevance in the AI era. The company delivered exceptional financial results in the fourth quarter of 2025, with iPhone 17 sales driving revenue well past analyst expectations. Apple reported record numbers of iPhone upgrades and strong double-digit growth in users switching from Android devices. Chief Executive Tim Cook described iPhone demand during that period as simply staggering.

A Challenging Market Backdrop

The launch arrives at a difficult moment for the global smartphone industry. A shortage of memory components, driven largely by surging demand from the AI sector, has created headwinds across the market. The International Data Corporation projects the global smartphone market will contract by 6.8% in the first quarter of this year.

Looking ahead, Apple has a packed product calendar. A redesigned version of Siri, expected to be powered by Google’s Gemini AI model, is anticipated later in the year after facing development delays. Speculation also continues to build around the possible launch of Apple’s first foldable iPhone before the year is out. Alongside the iPhone 17e, Apple also revealed a refreshed version of the iPad Air.
