The way journalists cover the US president is facing another change after the Trump administration restricted access for several major news organizations and altered a scheduled television pool assignment.
The White House media pool was created to solve a basic logistical problem. Presidential events often take place in locations that cannot accommodate every reporter, while sending large teams on every presidential trip can be extremely expensive.
A System Designed to Share Coverage
Under the pool system, a limited number of journalists attend an event on behalf of the wider press corps. They observe what happens, ask questions when permitted and provide their reporting, photographs or video to other organizations.
The system has existed since the Roosevelt administration and has evolved as television, radio, photography and digital media have become increasingly important.
Air Force One is one example of why pooling is necessary. The presidential aircraft has only 13 press seats, meaning the entire group of journalists cannot travel with the president.
Three Organizations Lose White House Access
The latest dispute began when President Donald Trump announced that CNN, MS NOW and Politico would be banned from the White House.
Trump said the decision was connected to what he characterized as inaccurate coverage. He also indicated that other news organizations could face similar treatment.
On September 19, journalists representing the three outlets were turned away from the White House grounds. Their press credentials were either confiscated or disabled.
The organizations have continued reporting on the administration despite losing physical access.
The Television Rotation Is Affected
The dispute became more complicated because CNN had been scheduled to serve as the TV pool representative on Monday.
Five major television networks — ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox and NBC — traditionally rotate responsibility for providing pooled television coverage. The assigned team supplies footage that can then be used by other members of the press corps.
CNN was also expected to travel with Trump to New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
The White House later removed CNN from the assignment, creating a break from the established rotation.
Access Rules Have Already Changed
The administration had already modified parts of the White House media pool since Trump returned to office in 2025.
Reuters and the Associated Press, which previously had permanent pool positions, were moved to a rotating arrangement. The White House also brought additional outlets into pooled events, including organizations that had not traditionally been part of the system.
The changes have produced disputes over how presidential access should be organized and which organizations should participate.
What the Pool Provides
The importance of the pool extends beyond convenience for news organizations. Its members provide firsthand coverage of the president’s activities when other journalists cannot be present.
A pool report can include the president’s comments, movements and responses to unexpected events. Television crews perform a similar role by providing live or recorded footage to other broadcasters.
Because the system depends on news organizations sharing responsibilities, removing one outlet can create additional staffing and financial demands for the remaining participants.
The current dispute has therefore placed the White House media pool under renewed attention. How the administration and press organizations handle the changes could affect the way presidential events are covered in the coming weeks.
